If you're serious about fishing the Gulf and want to get into the real action, this 8-hour charter with Proud Pelican is exactly what you need. We're talking about heading up to 100 miles offshore from Pensacola Beach, where the water turns that deep blue and the fish get big. Starting at 6:00 AM sharp, you'll spend the day chasing everything from Red Snapper on the bottom to Mahi Mahi and Wahoo cruising the open water. Our 35-foot sport fisher can handle six anglers comfortably and cruises at 30 knots, so we're not wasting time getting to the good spots. All your licenses and gear are covered - just bring yourself and maybe some snacks for the ride.
This isn't your typical inshore trip where you're hugging the beach all day. We're running serious offshore numbers here, and that means targeting structure that most boats never see. The morning usually starts with bottom fishing over wrecks and natural ledges where the snappers and grouper set up shop. These fish love vertical structure, and we've got GPS numbers on spots that consistently produce. As the day progresses and conditions allow, we'll switch gears to trolling for the pelagic species - that's where things get exciting with Kings, Mahi, and if we're lucky, some Wahoo. The beauty of an 8-hour window is flexibility. If the bottom bite is hot, we can stay on it. If we mark schools of Mahi under debris, we can work them hard. Your captain reads the water and adjusts the game plan based on what's happening that day.
We run a mix of bottom fishing and trolling depending on what we're targeting. For bottom structure, we're talking heavy conventional reels with enough drag to turn big grouper away from the rocks. Circle hooks are the standard for snapper to ensure good releases, and we'll have you dropping everything from live bait to cut squid depending on what they're eating. When we switch to trolling, the spread goes out with a mix of ballyhoo, diving plugs, and maybe some live bait if we can catch it. The boat carries both spinning and conventional setups, so whether you prefer cranking on heavy tackle or fighting fish on lighter gear, we've got you covered. Don't worry if you've never fished this far offshore before - the crew will walk you through everything from setting the drag to proper fighting technique.
Red Snapper are the bread and butter of Gulf fishing, and for good reason. These fish are aggressive feeders that hit hard and fight dirty, using every bit of structure they can find to break you off. Most of our snappers run between 15-25 pounds, with the occasional trophy pushing 30-plus. They're most active during the cooler parts of the day, which is why we start early. What makes them so popular is the combination of the fight and the table fare - there's nothing better than fresh snapper cooked right.
Spanish Mackerel are speed demons that'll test your reflexes when they hit a trolled bait. These fish typically run 2-4 pounds but what they lack in size they make up for in pure energy. They're most active during spring and fall migrations, and when you find a school, you can usually catch them until your arms get tired. They're perfect for light tackle and make excellent bait for bigger fish if you don't want to keep them all.
Red Grouper are the heavyweights of the bottom, and hooking one is like trying to pull a truck off the bottom. These fish can easily hit 20-40 pounds and use every cave and ledge to their advantage. They're ambush predators that sit tight to structure, so presentations need to be right on the money. The fight is all about the first few seconds - if you can get them up off the bottom, you've got a good chance. If not, you're probably re-rigging.
King Mackerel are the Gulf Coast favorites that can turn a good day into a great one. These fish average 15-30 pounds but can push 50-plus when conditions are right. They're trolling fish that like temperature breaks and moving water. When a King hits a trolled bait, there's no mistaking it - they'll scream line off the reel and put on an aerial show. They're also excellent eating when prepared right, despite what some people think.
Mahi Mahi are probably the most exciting fish you'll encounter out there. They travel in schools, hit baits aggressively, and jump like crazy when hooked. Most of our Mahi run 10-25 pounds, and they're almost always found around floating debris or weed lines. The key is finding the structure - once you locate a school under a debris line, you can usually catch multiple fish by keeping baits in the water. Their colors are incredible when they're fresh out of the water, and they're outstanding on the table.
An 8-hour offshore charter gives you the best shot at experiencing what Gulf fishing is really about. You're not rushed, you're not limited to close-in spots, and you've got time to adapt to what the fish are doing that day. Whether you're looking to fill the cooler with variety or target that fish of a lifetime, this trip puts you in position to succeed. The boat is equipped to handle whatever we encounter, the captain knows these waters inside and out, and with six-angler capacity, you can bring the whole crew. Don't wait until peak season when everyone's trying to get offshore - book your dates now and get ready for some serious Gulf Coast fishing.
