Gear & Techniques

Everything you need is already on board – tackle, bait, and even your fishing licenses are covered. We're talking about serious offshore gear here: heavy conventional reels spooled with enough line to handle long runs, circle hooks for the snappers and grouper, and wire leaders when we're targeting those toothy wahoo. You'll be using a mix of techniques throughout the day. Bottom fishing with knocker rigs and chicken rigs for the reef species, and high-speed trolling with lures and ballyhoo when we're hunting pelagics. The boat's electronics package includes GPS, fish finders, and chart plotters, so Captain Chris can put you right on top of structure and mark schools of baitfish that attract the gamefish we're after.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Red Snapper are the crown jewel of Gulf fishing, and these waters hold some monsters. These fish are structure-oriented, hanging around artificial reefs, oil rigs, and natural bottom formations. They're smart, strong fighters that will test your tackle and your patience. Peak season runs from June through August when federal waters are open, and you'll find them in 80 to 200 feet of water. These dolphin fish travel in schools and are attracted to floating debris, weed lines, and structure. Summer months from May through September offer the best action, though they can be caught year-round in warmer waters. Bulls can reach 40 to 50 pounds and provide some of the most exciting fights in offshore fishing.

Spanish Mackerel might be smaller than their king mackerel cousins, but they make up for size with sheer numbers and aggressive strikes. These fish are perfect for light tackle action and are excellent for getting kids or novice anglers hooked on offshore fishing. They're most abundant from spring through fall and are incredibly tasty when prepared fresh. Schools of Spanish mackerel can provide non-stop action when you find them feeding.
