Captain Chris Ruple's 10-hour offshore charter is your ticket to some of the Gulf of Mexico's most productive fishing grounds. This isn't your typical half-day trip – we're talking about a serious fishing adventure that starts at 6:00 am and takes you to those honey holes where the big fish live. With room for up to six anglers aboard a 35-foot Express Sport fisher, you'll have plenty of space to fight those trophy catches without bumping elbows. The extra time on the water means we can run to spots that shorter charters just can't reach, and that's where the magic happens.
This charter is all about getting to the good stuff – those deeper waters where Red Snapper, Grouper, and pelagic species like Wahoo and Mahi Mahi call home. Captain Chris knows exactly where to find them, and with 10 hours on the clock, he's not rushing through spots. You'll start the morning running offshore while the seas are typically calmer, then spend your day working structure, drop-offs, and open water depending on what's biting. The boat is rigged for both bottom fishing and trolling, so we can switch tactics based on conditions and what we're seeing on the fish finder. Don't worry if you're new to offshore fishing – Captain Chris and his crew will have you hooked up and fighting fish in no time.
Everything you need is already on board – tackle, bait, and even your fishing licenses are covered. We're talking about serious offshore gear here: heavy conventional reels spooled with enough line to handle long runs, circle hooks for the snappers and grouper, and wire leaders when we're targeting those toothy wahoo. You'll be using a mix of techniques throughout the day. Bottom fishing with knocker rigs and chicken rigs for the reef species, and high-speed trolling with lures and ballyhoo when we're hunting pelagics. The boat's electronics package includes GPS, fish finders, and chart plotters, so Captain Chris can put you right on top of structure and mark schools of baitfish that attract the gamefish we're after.
Red Snapper are the crown jewel of Gulf fishing, and these waters hold some monsters. These fish are structure-oriented, hanging around artificial reefs, oil rigs, and natural bottom formations. They're smart, strong fighters that will test your tackle and your patience. Peak season runs from June through August when federal waters are open, and you'll find them in 80 to 200 feet of water. What makes them special is their combination of fight and flavor – they'll peel line on the initial run and make great table fare.
Red Grouper are the bulldogs of the bottom, and once you hook one, you'll understand why serious anglers target them. These fish live in caves and ledges, and they'll try to cut you off on structure the moment they feel the hook. They're year-round residents but are most active during cooler months from October through March. Grouper can reach impressive sizes, with 20 to 30-pounders being common catches. Their white, flaky meat makes them a customer favorite for the dinner table.
King Mackerel, or "kings" as locals call them, are speed demons that will rip line off your reel like few other fish can. These pelagic predators follow bait schools and temperature breaks, making them perfect targets for trolling. Spring and fall migrations bring the biggest fish through these waters, with 20 to 40-pound kings being typical catches. They're incredibly fast and acrobatic fighters that will jump and make blistering runs that'll have your arms burning.
Mahi Mahi are the most colorful fighters you'll encounter, flashing brilliant greens, blues, and yellows as they jump and dance on the surface. These dolphin fish travel in schools and are attracted to floating debris, weed lines, and structure. Summer months from May through September offer the best action, though they can be caught year-round in warmer waters. Bulls can reach 40 to 50 pounds and provide some of the most exciting fights in offshore fishing.
Spanish Mackerel might be smaller than their king mackerel cousins, but they make up for size with sheer numbers and aggressive strikes. These fish are perfect for light tackle action and are excellent for getting kids or novice anglers hooked on offshore fishing. They're most abundant from spring through fall and are incredibly tasty when prepared fresh. Schools of Spanish mackerel can provide non-stop action when you find them feeding.
This 10-hour offshore charter represents some of the best fishing value you'll find on the Gulf Coast. With Captain Chris' local knowledge, top-notch equipment, and access to productive offshore grounds, you're setting yourself up for a memorable day on the water. The diversity of species available means every angler in your group will find something exciting to target, whether you're after trophy snappers or high-speed pelagics. These longer trips book up quickly, especially during peak seasons, so don't wait to secure your dates. Give Proud Pelican Charters a call and get ready for the kind of offshore fishing adventure that keeps anglers coming back year after year.
